Effect of anomalous warming in the central Pacific on the Australian monsoon

چکیده
[1] The influence of sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the central Pacific Ocean on rainfall variability over Australia is investigated using observations and idealized simulations from an atmospheric general circulation model. We show that the SST warming centered at 180 W is associated with increased monsoon precipitation over northern Australia from January to February and a decrease in December and March over the same region, leading to a shorter and more intense monsoon period. In recent years SST anomalies commonly associated with El Niño events have often exhibited a peak signature in the central, not eastern, Pacific. These so-called El Niño Modoki events are shown here to result in a markedly shorter andmore intense Australian monsoon season. Citation: Taschetto, A. S., C. C. Ummenhofer, A. Sen Gupta, and M. H. On the Phase Relations between the Western North Pacific, Indian, and Australian Monsoons*
The phase relationships of the western North Pacific (WNP) summer monsoon (WNPM) with the Australian monsoon (AM) and Indian monsoon (IM) are investigated using observational rainfall, SST, and NCEP reanalysis data for the period of 1979–2005. It is found that a strong WNPM often follows a strong AM but leads a weak AM, and a significant simultaneous negative correlation appears between WNPM an...
متن کاملModulation of North Pacific Tropical Cyclone Activity by Three Phases of ENSO
Tropical Pacific Ocean warming has been separated into two modes based on the spatial distribution of the maximum sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly: an east Pacific warming (EPW) and a central Pacific warming (CPW). When combined with east Pacific cooling (EPC), these three regimes are shown to have different impacts on tropical cyclone (TC) activity over the North Pacific by differential m...
متن کاملRemote and Local SST Forcing in Shaping Asian-Australian Monsoon Anomalies
The most striking feature of the Asian-Australian monsoon associated with the El Niño teleconnection is the evolution of anomalous anticyclones over the western North Pacific (WNP) and southeast Indian Ocean (SIO). In this study we investigated the relative role of remote and local SST forcing in shaping the monsoon anomalies with an atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM). Four idealized ...
متن کاملInterannual and Interdecadal Variations of the East Asian Summer Monsoon and Tropical Pacific SSTs. Part I: Roles of the Subtropical Ridge
The interannual relationship between the East Asian summer monsoon and the tropical Pacific SSTs is studied using rainfall data in the Yangtze River Valley and the NCEP reanalysis for 1951–96. The datasets are also partitioned into two periods, 1951–77 and 1978–96, to study the interdecadal variations of this relationship. A wet summer monsoon is preceded by a warm equatorial eastern Pacific in...
متن کاملSummer precipitation anomalies in Asia and North America induced by Eurasian non-monsoon land heating versus ENSO
When floods ravage Asian monsoon regions in summer, megadroughts often attack extratropical North America, which feature an intercontinental contrasting precipitation anomaly between Asia and North America. However, the characteristics of the contrasting Asian-North American (CANA) precipitation anomalies and associated mechanisms have not been investigated specifically. In this article, we fir...
